North Carolina state and federal agencies arrest 30 for drugs

It was announced on Jan. 9 that 30 people were arrested on a variety of drug-related charges following a joint investigation by North Carolina state law enforcement agencies, local police and federal agencies in Bladen County. The investigation focused on the town of Bladenboro and its surrounding area.

Investigations intensified after multiple complaints were received by the Bladen County Sheriff's Office about drug sales in and around Bladenboro. Authorities identified 35 people who allegedly sold and distributed drugs around the town. On Jan. 4, multiple agencies took 27 people into custody out of the 35 who were identified. Three more people were arrested on Jan. 7.

The people were charged with multiple offenses related to controlled substances and firearms. The Bladen County Sheriff's Office has warrants for the arrests of the other five people who were identified as dealing drugs. Law enforcement agencies in on the raid included the Bladenboro Police Department, Bladenboro County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshall's Office, Drug Enforcement Administration, and North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Drug offenses can result in serious penalties following convictions. When the alleged acts involve drug sales and firearms, the potential penalties may be much more severe. Someone who is charged with drug crimes might benefit from getting help from an experienced criminal lawyer who practices in both state and federal court. Legal counsel could develop a strong defense strategy on behalf of the client. For example, the attorney may negotiate with the assigned prosecutor to try to secure a more favorable plea offer. In some cases, legal counsel could litigate through motions hearings and a jury trial.
