North Carolina man sentenced to 30 years for drug trafficking

On Dec. 14, a Clinton man was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale narcotics trafficking organization that operated in three states. Additionally, the man will be placed on federal supervision for 10 years upon his release from prison. The organization was one of the 'most significant" drug trafficking groups ever prosecuted in the state, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The investigation into the organization yielded evidence that included physical surveillance, wiretaps and testimony from undercover police and confidential informants. The Clinton man was one of 25 individuals indicted and ultimately was found guilty of trafficking large amounts of methamphetamines, cocaine and crack cocaine. He and three other defendants pled not guilty to the charges against them.

The man had an extensive criminal record with numerous drug offenses dating back to 1995. In 2003, he was convicted on felony drug charges in Sampson County and sentenced to serve up to 10 months in prison. He was convicted again on misdemeanor assault charges and released from jail in 2008. In 2013, he was convicted in Georgia for trafficking cocaine and was released in 2016.

The main factors behind the harsh sentence were the massive amounts of evidence prosecutors presented against the offender and his extensive criminal history. Furthermore, the recent crimes against him included the most serious drug offenses and violent crimes. Depending on the case and evidence, a defense attorney could help a client obtain a more lenient sentence. Every person charged with an offense has the right to mount a legal defense. In some situations, a lawyer may be able to obtain an acquittal or get a case thrown out.
