North Carolina man pleads guilty to heroin charges

On Nov. 27, a North Carolina man pleaded guilty to federal drug charges. The charges stemmed from a drug sting that has led to the conviction of 15 other people.

According to prosecutors, the defendant, a 34-year-old New Bern man, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute over 1,000 grams of heroin and a quantity of marijuana. He came to the attention of authorities during a multi-year investigation into a heroin trafficking operation centered in New Bern. In 2017, investigators intercepted cell phone communications that showed he was involved in supplying and distributing heroin from New York to New Bern. As a result of the communications, the defendant and two others were arrested while returning from a trip to New York. Apparently, 3 pounds of cannabis and seven bars of a substance used to cut with heroin were found in their possession. The value of the drugs was estimated to be around $30,000.

As a result of his conviction, the defendant faces at least 20 years in prison and up to $10 million in fines. The other 15 defendants face sentences ranging from two years to life in prison. The investigation was conducted by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the New Bern Police Department, Jacksonville Police Department, Craven County Sheriff's Office, Pamlico County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration.

Federal drug charges are very serious and frequently lead to lengthy prison terms and steep fines. However, a criminal defense lawyer could represent a drug defendant's interests in court and work to obtain a better outcome.
