Twelve arrested in drug trafficking sting

Twelve North Carolina residents have been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to transport drugs into the state. The arrests were the culmination of "Operation Thunderstruck," an investigation conducted by state, federal and local law enforcement officers.

According to authorities, the investigation took aim at people who were trying to traffic heroin via Interstate 95 and Interstate 85. It also aimed to cut down on violent crimes associated with drug trafficking. The defendants, who range in age from 27 to 53, are facing multiple drug-related charges, including possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and maintaining a place for manufacturing and distributing drugs. Several defendants are also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Multiple state and local agencies participated in the investigation, including the Henderson Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Vance County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. They were assisted by several federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives; U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency; U.S. Marshal Service; and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.

If convicted, individuals charged with drug trafficking could face years in prison. As a result, defendants may want to contact a Raleigh, North Carolina, drug charges criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible. An experienced attorney could help protect a defendant's rights throughout legal proceedings and work to undermine the prosecution's case. In some circumstances, legal counsel may recommend arranging a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties in exchange for the defendant's guilty plea.
