Newly elected mayor gets drunk driving charge

A man who won an election to become the mayor of Sharpsburg, North Carolina, was taken into custody for DUI hours after winning. The man arrived in Nash County Jail at about 11:30 p.m. on May 8 and was released the next morning. He was charged with driving while impaired as well as being in possession of a concealed weapon and possessing it while consuming alcohol.

The new mayor was also charged with multiple counts of resisting or obstructing a police officer's ability to perform his or her duties. There were no details as to how authorities determined that the driver was intoxicated or where police first made contact with him. There were also no details as to what his blood alcohol content was at the time that he was taken into custody.

If an individual is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, that person may face significant penalties. In some cases, an individual could be terminated from his or her job or lose parental rights simply for being charged. Those who are convicted of a drunk or impaired driving charge could spend time in jail or prison, pay a fine and lose his or her drivers license. A conviction of gun or other related charges could mean additional jail time or other penalties.

Therefore, it may be a good idea to consult with a DWI defense attorney. An attorney could come up with defenses to drunk driving or other criminal charges. These may include casting doubt on the validity of a traffic stop or vehicle search. They could also include casting doubt on police or other witness testimony in a case. If appropriate, legal counsel may try to negotiate a plea deal in an effort to reduce some or all penalties.
