Man indicted on child pornography charges facing 20 years

On May 23, it was reported that a North Carolina man was indicted on child pornography charges by a federal grand jury. According to the indictment, the 22-year-old Wilmington man was accused of receiving and possessing multiple files that contained sexual images with minors in them.

It was believed that the man received the images on or around May 4. Ultimately, the man was charged with four counts of receipt of child pornography and a fifth charge for possession of child pornography. A conviction on these charges could amount to a maximum of 20 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release following the prison term.

This case was reportedly part of an initiative called the Project Safe Childhood Initiative. This program, which is taking place across the country, is aiming to ensure that all available law enforcement resources are being used to effectively prosecute those who are believed to be exploiting children. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was reportedly involved in the investigation for this particular case.

The consequences for convictions on federal charges are often severe depending on the type of charge. When it comes to convictions on child pornography crimes, for example, a person may not only be sentenced to prison but may also be required to register as a sex offender once he or she is released. This potentially means that the person may not be able to work in certain industries or live in certain areas near where children congregate. The person may even be unable to have electronic devices, limiting the ability to find work later on. A criminal defense attorney may review the case and work to challenge the evidence, especially if authorities misrepresented the evidence or failed to follow proper procedures.
