Former North Carolina deputy indicted on drug and gun charges

A 33-year-old former deputy at the Gates County Sheriff's Office has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly stealing guns and drugs. The federal charges against him involve illegally possessing two firearms and possessing various controlled substances for the purposes of distribution.

According to a news release from the regional U.S. Attorney's Office, the man took one firearm from a motorist during a traffic stop and never filed it as evidence with the sheriff's department. Federal investigators also accused him of stealing a weapon from the law enforcement agency along with heroin, fentanyl, morphine, methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine seized during drug investigations. Convictions for his federal charges could send him to prison for decades. Maximum sentences for the firearms charges are 10 years each, and the drug charges could result in as many as 20 years in prison.

The former deputy's federal charges emerged during a larger investigation of corruption at the sheriff's office. State charges of embezzlement by a public officer and obstruction of justice had already been filed against him. The State Bureau of Investigation also produced criminal charges against the former interim sheriff and three other officers at the department.

A person confronted by a serious situation like this might benefit from legal representation. A Raleigh, North Carolina, drug charges criminal defense lawyer could guide the defendant through courtroom procedures and offer advice about choosing between a trial or pursuing a plea deal. The advocacy of an attorney might allow someone to make informed decisions and counteract aggressive prosecution.
