DWI charges for county employee

A North Carolina man who worked as a quality assurance specialist for a county emergency medical service was dismissed from his job after being charged with DWI. The charge is in relation to an incident that happened on the morning of April 21.

According to reports, the man was driving on Mocksville Highway and ran off the road. After overcorrecting, he turned over into a ditch on the other side of the road. Police say that his blood alcohol level was .17 percent. In North Carolina, the legal limit is .08. He was charged with failure to maintain lane and driving while impaired.

The man was employed at his job for approximately 16 months before being dismissed following the charges. The county has a policy of running criminal background checks on employees before they are hired. The man is still employed as a part-time paramedic in another county where the director said he was aware of the DWI.

As this case demonstrations, getting a DWI can have repercussions beyond the legal consequences. A person might lose a job or be unable to get to work due to a license suspension. People who are charged with a DWI might want to consult a DWI defense criminal defense lawyer. There may be ways to get the charges reduced or dismissed. For example, if law enforcement did not follow proper procedure in detaining the person and violated the person's rights, evidence and even the case might be dismissed. It may also be possible to work out a deal in which charges are reduced if the person completes a treatment program or some other condition.
