3 North Carolina men face federal prison for trafficking drugs

According to news sources, three men from Sampson, North Carolina, are facing federal prison for allegedly running a sophisticated drug trafficking organization. The trio was convicted of the charges against them after a seven-day jury trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The men were found guilty of conspiring to distribute cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine, heroin and crack cocaine. They were also found guilty of distribution of multiple substances and some federal firearms offenses. The leader of the ring reportedly started a trucking company in 2016 that the ring used to launder money from the drug trafficking organization.

All three men have multiple prior felony convictions, and one of the men spent 12 years in prison from 2001 to 2013 for second-degree murder. Two of the men were arrested in an earlier investigation into drug activity in southern Sampson. The investigation that led to the men's current convictions began in 2016 and netted 11 pounds of cocaine. It is unclear when the men will be sentenced and how much time they are facing.

Allegations of serious drug crimes may result in long prison sentences if people are convicted as they are charged. Accused individuals may want to talk to drug charge criminal defense lawyers. Experienced defense attorneys may investigate the case against their clients to build defenses to the charges. The lawyers may seek to have some of the evidence suppressed by filing evidentiary motions. Attorneys might be able to negotiate favorable pleas for their clients that have capped sentences for reduced time or to lesser charges. In some cases, they may fight for their clients' rights by litigating through the court process.
