North Carolina teacher accused of taking indecent liberties

If you drive out west of Raleigh for about three hours -- out past Chapel Hill, High Point, Winston-Salem and Hickory -- you will arrive in Lenoir, North Carolina. The town of about 18,000 residents was recently the site of an arrest of a middle-school teacher. The 29-year-old was arrested on three felony counts of indecent liberties with a child.

A law enforcement spokesperson said the three incidents took place on the property of the William Lenoir Middle School, where the suspect is a teacher. The incidents are said to involve students at the school.

He was also indicted on two additional indecent liberties charges for incidents that allegedly happened while he worked at Granite Falls Middle School two years ago.

According to a news report, Granite Falls police knew about the prior allegations and forwarded the results of their investigation to the District Attorney in 2015. No charges were filed at that time.

Officials at Caldwell County Schools said they were aware of the allegations, but allowed the teacher to transfer to William Lenoir because no charges had been filed and no claims been proven true.

According to the news article, the teacher is being held on a $150,000 secured bond.

North Carolina law states that a person is guilty of taking indecent liberties with a child if they commit or attempt "to commit any lewd or lascivious act" on a child under the age of 16. The crime is a Class F felony punishable by up to 41 months in prison.
