Traffic stop section in driving handbook to increase safety

In the case of a traffic stop where you face a traffic violation, it is important to understand your rights. Especially if you suspect a law enforcement officer did not follow the proper protocol, it is imperative you understand the law, because it may be possible to receive a dismissal on the case.

It is also important to know your rights and the proper way to handle a stop in general so you remain safe. The new traffic stop section in the North Carolina driving handbook will hopefully assist with this process.

New section

Earlier this year, the North Carolina state government signed House Bill 21 into effect. This bill, also known as Driver Instruction/Law Enforcement Stops Bill, requires that the North Carolina driver's handbook now include a section that denotes how a traffic stop should go. Not only does it detail how a driver should act, it also shares how the officer must handle the situation as well. This helps to establish an appropriate interaction between a driver and law enforcement.

By adding this element to the driving handbook, the state is essentially requiring additional training for drivers. Considering the high stress level of a traffic stop, such training may be beneficial in more ways than one. New training will provide new drivers with an understanding of how they need to operate during a traffic stop, as well as demonstrate actions they should not take. This may help to reduce stress levels for attending officers. Also, it may give law enforcement professionals a new outlook on the procedure. In short, this knowledge may help reduce a stressful situation and prevent any escalation of the stop.

Though the addition of this traffic stop section may be small in writing, it has the potential to make a large impact. Take some time to review the new law to fully understand how it might affect you and other drivers.
