North Carolina man faces revenge porn charge

It is about a two-hour drive southeast of Raleigh to get to Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Marine Corps Air Station New River. A 39-year-old Marine stationed there is facing legal problems on several fronts, according to news reports.

He was recently arrested by Jacksonville police officers and charged with disclosure of private images. He is accused of posting so-called revenge porn on Facebook. He allegedly posted without consent an image of a nude, 24-year-old civilian woman, as well as several additional photos of her in nothing but underwear.

According to a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Police Department, the defendant and the woman had in the past been involved in a relationship. The spokesperson did not say if it is known whether the woman consented to the photos being taken.

The spokesperson said Jacksonville police made the arrest rather than the United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) because the alleged incident was reported to them.

On the very same day as the arrest, regulations governing members of the Navy and Marines were updated in the wake of the negative publicity surrounding the Marines United scandal. Marines United is a Facebook page on which photos of nude and partially clothed women in the military were posted without their consent.

The updated policy effectively criminalizes the distribution of explicit photos by Marines and sailors without consent.

Task & Purpose, a publication about military matters, reports that the charge against the Marine is a felony under North Carolina law.

Clearly, not only is the man's career jeopardized by the accusation, but so is his freedom.

According to news reports, he will have a criminal defense attorney at his upcoming scheduled court appearance.
